Stoney Creek High School opened its doors in 2002 as the third high school in the Rochester Community Schools. The Music Department offerings
include three concert bands, marching band, music theory, guitar, and five choirs that all meet during the school day. The choral courses include Treble Choir for ninth grade female singers, Men's Choir for ninth grade male singers, a mixed Concert Choir, an auditioned mixed Chorale, and the highly selective Chamber Singers. The instrumental courses include Concert Band for incoming students, Symphony Band, and Wind Ensemble. The elective courses include Marching Band, which meets outside of the school day for credit, music theory, and guitar.

A heavy emphasis is placed on Solo & Ensemble participation and chamber music throughout the program, where 70% of the students will participate in Solo & Ensemble Festival.  All of the performing ensembles at Stoney Creek have consistently received Superior ratings at festivals, and in the school's ten year history the music department has proven itself to be one of the finest in the area.

A major component of the music education experience at Stoney Creek is the creation of new music. Through the Stoney Creek Commissioning Project, the bands and choirs have premiered many new works, and have seen several of those pieces subsequently performed across the country. This invaluable experience has sparked an interest in several student composers, and it is one way that we aim to broaden the scope and understanding of their musical literacy.

The choirs perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Chamber Winds, and at the Detroit Opera House on a regular basis, and were the choral forces in the Canadian Premier of Play! at the Hummingbird Centre in 2006. Masterwork performances with the Rochester Symphony include the Vivaldi Gloria, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Mozart's Coronation Mass, the Rutter Gloria with the Detroit Chamber Winds, and Boito's Prologue to Mefistopheles with the Pontiac-Oakland Symphony. The Choirs also annually combine with other Rochester Schools groups to form the Rochester Masterworks Chorale which performs larger works with orchestral accompaniment.

The Chamber Singers have performed at the 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2015 Michigan Music Conferences, and the Wind Ensemble had its Michigan Music Conference premiere in 2007. The Chamber Singers have performed at the 2010 and 2014 ACDA State Conventions and the 2012 ACDA Central Division Convention, and were honored as the 2014 State Outstanding Choir by MSVMA.  Music students from Stoney Creek have won significant performance competitions, including Youth Arts Festival Soloist Nominations, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra Idol Competition, and NATS competitions. Students have earned places in National Broadway Touring Companies, numerous All-State ensembles, and many have gone on to study music at the collegiate level.
The bands and choirs alternate years of travel.  In 2014 the choirs toured France and performed at Notre Dame Cathedral, and the bands will travel to Disney in 2015.  A choral tour of Italy with performance in St. Peters Cathedral (Rome) is planned.
