FAQ's regarding FICA refund from September 4, 2012 through December 31, 2012

Why is the refund only for this short period of time? It was during this time that PA 75 ended and PA 300 was enacted. The IRS is allowing the District to refile claims for this time period.

PA 300 granted members the choice to continue contributing 3% to the Retiree Healthcare Fund and keep the premium subsidy benefit, or could instead choose the Personal Healthcare Fund, which can be used to pay healthcare expenses in retirement.

When can I expect my refund? We anticipate the consent process will take approximately 90 days. Once all necessary consent forms have been received we will begin the refund process with the IRS.  The final step will be issuing checks to claimants. It is our hope that the process will be completed by August, 2019.

How will this affect my taxes for 2012? Claiming the refund will adjust your FICA reportable wages. We strongly urge you to seek the advice of a tax professional.

Will this affect my Social Security retirement? Claiming the refund will adjust your FICA reportable wages. We strongly urge you to seek the advice of a tax professional
