English Language Learners

The English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum is designed to support students in acquiring the English language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) necessary for learners to be successful. It is our goal to provide a safe and supportive learning environment where children feel comfortable as they progress in the acquisition of the English language.

Students come to ESL with different educational backgrounds and experiences with English. Some individuals learn languages easily and others take longer. Please emphasize to your child that it is important to demonstrate effort and perseverance in every class. The teachers know that your child is learning English and they are very patient with ELL students.

Support provided through the ESL program is based on student level and needs.

Curriculum by Grade Level

Elementary

Middle School

The purpose of the ESL program at the Middle School is to help students acquire the necessary skills in English to be successful for social and academic purposes.

EL students receive meaningful English assignments daily.
Quizzes are given in ESL to assess progress in English.
EL students may come to the ESL Center to get help with tests and quizzes from any of their classes.
A strong home and school connection is welcomed and encouraged.

High School

The purpose of the ESL program at the High School is to help students acquire the necessary skills in English to be successful for social and academic purposes.

ESL English students receive meaningful English instruction daily.
ESL Study Skills students receive help with vocabulary, concepts, and assignments from content classes.
EL students may come to the ESL Center to get help with tests and quizzes from any of their classes.
A strong home and school connection is welcomed and encouraged.

If you are interested in enrolling in the Rochester Community Schools ESL Program, contact Student Enrollment at the Administration Center, Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 248.726.3000

At the time of enrollment, identify the home/primary language spoken on a daily basis in the home. Arrange for an evaluation of English Proficiency with the appropriate ESL staff member. The ESL Consultant will contact you to make testing arrangements.
