English Language Learners

The English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum is designed to support students in acquiring the English language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) necessary for learners to be successful. It is our goal to provide a safe and supportive learning environment where children feel comfortable as they progress in the acquisition of the English language.

Students come to ESL with different educational backgrounds and experiences with English. Some individuals learn languages easily and others take longer. Please emphasize to your child that it is important to demonstrate effort and perseverance in every class. The teachers know that your child is learning English and they are very patient with ELL students.

Support provided through the ESL program is based on student level and needs.

Typically it is recommended that students with Levels 1, 2 & 3 English language proficiency attend one of the ESL Centers. This is determined at the time of enrollment by using the W-APT Screener

Students at Levels 4 & 5 attend their home school with support.
