Work Based Learning
What is Work Based Learning?
Work-based learning (WBL) is an educational approach that combines academic instruction with on-the-job experience. WBL is designed to give students practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in the workplace, while also providing them with the academic knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen fields.
WBL programs can take many forms, including apprenticeships, internships, co-ops, and job shadowing. In each of these programs, students work under the guidance of a mentor or supervisor who provides them with practical training and feedback.
The goal of WBL is to help students gain a deeper understanding of their chosen field and to prepare them for success in the workforce. By working in a real-world setting, students can develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management, which can be difficult to acquire through traditional classroom instruction alone.
WBL is used in a wide range of industries, from healthcare and manufacturing to technology and finance. It is often used in vocational and technical education programs, but it can also be integrated into traditional academic programs as a way to provide students with hands-on experience and practical skills that will help them succeed in their careers.
Why take Work Based Learning?

-
Network with professionals: Work-based learning provides opportunities to meet and network with professionals in the field, potentially leading to job opportunities and valuable connections.
-
Increase employability: Completing work-based learning can enhance an individual's employability, as it demonstrates to potential employers that they have relevant skills and experience in their chosen field.
-
Enhance academic learning: Work-based learning can complement academic learning, providing a real-world context for classroom learning and enhancing understanding of theoretical concepts.
Overall, work-based learning can be an excellent way to gain practical experience, develop industry-specific skills, build professional networks, increase employability, and enhance academic learning.
