The keyboard may have been switched off of US/English.  To get it back to the standard US/English keyboard follow the directions below:

• If you are logged in to the Chromebook, Sign Out.
• At the login screen, click the time in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen).
• Check the following settings:
  • Accessibility - All items in the Accessibility area should be unchecked unless you have a specific need for them.
  • Keyboard - Be sure the English (US) keyboard is selected.
• Sign back into your Chromebook to see if this resolves your problem.

If the letters you type change to other letters automatically, you might have unwanted substitutions set in Google Docs.  To remove them, follow the steps below:

• Open any Google Doc
• Go to Tools->Preferences
• On the Substitutions tab, look at all the allowed substitutions, click the X next to any substitutions that you don't want.

Substitutions can be a beneficial tool.  If you commonly misspell a word, you can enter a substitution with the misspelling and it will be automatically changed to the correct spelling.

There are several reasons why your screen may be dim or dark.  Check out the reasons below to see if it fixes brightens your screen.

Night Light Mode turned on:

• While you are logged in, click the time in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen).
• Click on the Settings gear.
• In the search bar, search for Accessibility.
• Click Manage Accessibility Features
  • Look for Night Mode and make sure it is UNCHECKED.
  • All items should be UNCHECKED, unless you have a specific need for them.

Check your Brightness Level:

• While you are logged in, click the time in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen).
• You can find the brightness control beneath the volume control.  It has a sun icon.  Move the slider to the right to brighten up your screen.

If you can see the light indicating that the Chromebook is turned on, but the screen is black, follow these steps to see if you can get the screen to start working again.

• Power off the Chromebook by pressing and holding the power button until the light goes out.
• Attach the Power supply charger.
• Press the power button again to turn the Chromebook back on.

If your screen is rotated 90 or 180 degrees, it is easy to put it back to normal.

• Press Ctrl + Shift + Refresh until the screen is back to normal.
   

If your Chromebook is displaying everything in a different language, it is because your Language settings have been changed. Click the quick start guide below for steps to change it back to your desired language.

If you've charged your Chromebook overnight and it still won't power on, follow these steps:

• Press and hold Refresh + Power buttons for 10 seconds.

•  Turn the Chromebook back on.

If you have misplaced or lost your charger, please do not use a different charger to charge your Chromebook.  Other chargers may cause damage to the device, for which you may be financially responsible.  Only use the Dell Charger that was issued with the Chromebook to charge your Chromebook.

Start by powering off the Chromebook by pressing and holding the power button.  Turn the Chromebook back on.

If the touchpad is still not responding, try these things to get it to start working:

• Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the touchpad
• Press the Esc key several times
• Drumroll your fingers on the touch pad for ten seconds
• Turn your Chromebook off, then back on again
• Perform a hard reset:
  • Turn off your Chromebook
  • Press and hold Refresh + tap the Power button.

  •  When your Chromebook starts up, release the Refresh button.

You may need to update the operating system on your Chromebook.  We have three different models in the district:

• 3100 - This model should update automatically.  You can use the process outlined below to check that your device is up to date.  If it isn't acting as expected, you may need to make an appointment to have it swapped for a different Chromebook.  Use the button on this page to schedule an appointment.
• 3120 & 3189 - These models will no longer update. Please schedule an appointment using the button on this page to swap your device for a newer model.

Note:  You can find the model you have by looking at the bottom of your Chromebook.

If you've tried everything and you can't get your Chromebook working, try performing a hard reset (if you haven't already):

• Turn off your Chromebook
• Press and hold Refresh + tap the Power button.

•  When your Chromebook starts up, release the Refresh button.

If that doesn't get your Chromebook up and running - you can take it to the Media Center in your school to have a technician look at it or make an appointment to swap it for a new one.
