Welcome to the High School E.L.L. Center

The ELL Program is designed to meet the special needs of high school students learning English.  The High School ELL Program is located at Rochester High School.  English Language Learners from all attendance areas receive service at Rochester High.

Mission Statement:

Rochester Community Schools seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin or native language, quality and meaningful instruction.  Students who are limited English proficient are provided meaningful instructional services through the high school ELL Program which is designed to meet their unique needs in the following ways:

  • Direct English Instruction

ELL students develop  English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  They  work to increase vocabulary and communication and use  journals, conversation, media, and supplemental work  to improve their fluency. Rochester Community Schools offers three levels of ELL English instruction.

  • Academic Support

Students refine their study skills by working with academic vocabulary, concepts, and assignments from their content classes.  Students may work in small groups with others studying the same topics, or may receive one-on-one instruction. Students assess their own progress as they increase their success in high school courses.

  • Helping the Student in the American School Setting

A very important part of the ELL Program is helping students become more involved in the American school.  We encourage students to participate in school activities such as dances, clubs, sports, and special programs,  We support students in meeting new bilingual and American friends and becoming more comfortable in their new school.

  • Celebrating Different Cultures

Each student is unique and has special talents that should be celebrated.  ELL Staff are committed to helping the other students and teachers in the school learn more about the cultures and experiences of our international students.  ELL students are frequently guest speakers and tutors in other classes.
