The PTA Council voted to release the Legislative committee’s statement below regarding HB 4647 and SB 401: legislation that would close the state’s hybrid Pension Plus plan. Initially Governor Snyder said he would not compromise on these bills stating that they are working and need to continue however, recent discussion in Lansing reveals Gov. Snyder and legislative leaders have agreed on a “tentative framework” under which the state school pension system for public school employees, MPSERS, would be phased out but not closed. There is speculation that the House is going to take up the their version of this legislation on Wednesday afternoon. Please share this information with your building parents and if you are so inclined, please CALL your State Representative and State Senator TODAY.

Why make a statement?

  • to let legislators in Lansing know we are watching the laws that they propose and how they will impact kids in public education.
  • to let education professionals know we value them by opposing legislation that is not only fiscally irresponsible but devalues the education professionals throughout our school district.

Who else opposes this legislation?

  • The Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB)
  • The Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA)
  • Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO)
  • Michigan Education Association (MEA)
  • Michigan State PTA

Here is a sample call script:

“Hi. I’m a constituent and calling to express my concern about the proposed legislation (HB 4647 and SB 401) to close or speculative discussion to phase out the state’s hybrid pension plan for teachers. Please vote “NO” on legislation that is fiscally irresponsible. The current hybrid system is fully funded with a plan in place to pay off the liabilities of the old system by 2038 and the additional costs of a new contribution plan will continue to impact the state’s budget, the School Aid Fund and ultimately kids in classrooms. Lastly, we invest in what we value and this legislation is a deterrent to teachers and future educators. Thanks for you time and consideration.”
