2013-2014

Dear WMS Families,

As we continue to grow as a WMS Learning Community, we are moving forward with an array of Cultures of Thinking instructional strategies. Based on the research led by Ron Ritchhart at Harvard University, these strategies strive to develop critical thinking, a deeper level of understanding, and a collaborative approach to learning for all students. Throughout the year, our school professional staff, along with parents, will have the opportunity to experience many of the thinking strategies outlined in Making Thinking Visible authored by Ron Ritchhart and members of the Cultures of Thinking team.

On our building website, we will be posting a variety of thinking routines throughout the school year. We are excited to share these instructional strategies with our parent community as well as our students both in and outside the classroom. We encourage you to monitor our website and participate in the school-wide activities.

To participate in our first routine, please print the See Think Wonder Routine Parent Guide, view the video, and take a thinking journey with your child and all of West Middle School. Please return the learning sheet to the Front Office by Friday, November 15th. Like we do in the classroom, we will be creating a school-wide Visible Thinking display to showcase all the different types of thinking generated by this routine. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail Mike Dillon mdillon@rochester.k12.mi.us, Christine Sisoler csisoler@rochester.k12.mi.us, or Julie Rains jrains@rochester.k12.mi.us.

We look forward to your participation as we continue to grow as a learning community!

Sincerely,

West Staff
