Learning with Luna

We are very lucky to have Luna at McGregor Elementary.  Thank you Ms. Rewers (4th Grade Teacher) for sharing your wonderful dog with everyone at our school.

Research supports the use of pets in the classroom. Several McGregor teachers have classroom pets. Frogs, fish, turtles, and guinea pigs are some of the animals that welcome our students each day. Luna is a therapy dog certified and insured through Therapy Dog International (http://www.tdi-dog.org/). Luna is calm, quiet, and phenomenal with kids. Through this program, Luna visits McGregor one to two times per week.

Some Benefits of Classroom Animals:

  • Even kids with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals.
  • Observing and caring for an animal instills a sense of responsibility and respect for life.
  • A pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others - both animals and humans.
  • Kids learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival.  Students will see directly how their behavior and actions affect others.
  • Studies show that the presence of animals tends to lessen tension in the classroom.
