The RCS Caring Steps Children's Center serves children from birth through age five, with the quality, care, and teaching that our families have grown to expect from Rochester Community Schools. Highlights include:

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the center officially open? The childcare facility is slated to open September 4, 2018.

What are the hours of operation? The center is open Monday-Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Where is it located? The children’s center is located at 3838 N. Rochester Road, north of Gunn, in Oakland Township. The district purchased and renovated an existing building that formerly housed a church/school. The center offers 36,000 square feet on 23 acres. New classroom configurations feature new furniture, flooring, ceilings, and more.

What ages do you serve? Childcare is offered from birth through age 5. Preschool is offered for ages 3-5.

I don’t live in the RCS district boundaries. Can I still enroll my child for preschool and childcare services? Yes. Services are open to all members of the greater Rochester community and beyond. This includes residents of neighboring cities. RCS teachers and staff living outside the district are also welcome to utilize the childcare services for their children. RCS residency is not a requirement.

What are the costs and options?

Monthly tuition pricing for programs for ages birth - 3 years old include:

  • $541 for two days a week
  • $803 for three days a week
  • $1,040 for four days a week
  • $1,250 for five days a week.

Monthly tuition pricing for programs for ages 3-5 are:

  • $462 for two days a week
  • $681 for three days a week
  • $875 for four days a week
  • $1,042 for five days a week

Will Rochester Community School District residents or staff receive a discount? No discounts are available for RCS residents or staff.

Will snacks be provided? Yes. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided and are included in the monthly fee.

Will breakfast and lunch be provided? Yes. Breakfast and lunch options are available for the entire month at an additional cost.

Breakfast:

  • $ 12 for two days a week
  • $ 18 for three days a week
  • $ 25 for four days a week
  • $ 31 for five days a week

Lunch:

  • $ 24 for two days a week
  • $ 37 for three days a week
  • $ 50 for four days a week
  • $ 63 for five days a week

Can I pay for a partial day of childcare or preschool? No. Partial day rates are not available. Of course, you may pick up your child at any time, but in order to plan for appropriate staffing levels, only full-day rates will be offered at this time.

Can I enroll mid-year? New students may enroll at any time as space permits.

Can I enroll in the preschool program, but opt out of the summer session? No. The RCS Caring Steps Children’s Center preschool curriculum is designed as a year-round, 12-month program. Parents with preschool children, ages 4-5, living within district boundaries are welcome to enroll their son or daughter in one of our outstanding Pre-K programs. Enrollment for current-year Pre-K programs ends December 31.

Will the Children’s Center offer summer camps? No. The center only operates year-long programs. Summer-specific programs are offered through RCS School Age Care (SAC). More information is available on the website at: http://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/pages/5072/school-age-care.

I need a childcare facility that is open, even if RCS closes school for a snow day. Will the new facility be open during snow days? Yes. The center will be open during inclement weather.

Will the center be open when RCS students are off, such as through the summer months or school professional development days? The childcare facility will follow its own schedule, independent from the programs operating elsewhere in the district. The services run all year, and the building is only closed on weekends and major holidays.

What preschool curriculum is followed? The RCS Caring Steps Children’s Center Educational philosophy is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach.

How many children are in each classroom or care room? Infants, 0-12 months, may have up to eight students in a classroom. Young toddlers, 12-30 months, may have up to 12 students in a classroom. Young threes, 30-36 months, may have up to 16 students in a classroom. Preschool, ages 3-4, may have up to 20 students in a classroom. Pre-kindergarten, ages 4-5, may have up to 24 students in a classroom.

Are special education services available? Since Special Education services are available for both children and adults, ages 0-26, living within the boundaries of Rochester Community Schools, the RCS Caring Steps Children’s Center will not duplicate services. Please contact the RCS Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Department to learn more. How can I inquire about employment at the children’s center? Staffing will be contracted through Genesee Education Consultant Services. Job postings and more information can be found on the GECS website at https://www.gecs-inc.org/. We anticipate job postings to be available in August.

Is the building locked throughout the day? The facility is fully secure. All visitors must enter through the main entrance using the visitor verification system. All exterior doors remain locked throughout the day.

Is the facility “nut sensitive?” Yes. This is a nut-sensitive center. Nut products are not permitted in nut‐sensitive classrooms.

Is transportation available? No. Transportation services are not provided to and/or from the childcare facility.

Is outdoor play available? Yes, the children’s center includes a safe, new outdoor playground area where children will be supervised.

Are you licensed? Yes. The programs and services are fully licensed with the state of Michigan.

If my child completes preschool at the children’s center, can he or she enroll in RCS K-12 programs later, even if I am a nonresident? Although the children’s center offers childcare and preschool services to people living outside the RCS district boundaries, K-12 students MUST reside within school district boundaries, based on their home address.

Are tours of the facility available? An open house will be scheduled shortly. Building tours will be available once the facility is open.
