In October 2016, Public Act 306 (better known as the Third Grade Reading Law) was signed into law.  The law has many components that are geared toward achieving literacy success for grades K-3.  The major component of the law, retention for third grade students who do not pass the State of Michigan English Language Arts assessment in the spring of 2020.  Students who do not pass the test will be retained in third grade for the following year.  Parents should note that there are several "good cause exemptions" that would allow students to proceed to fourth grade.  Other components of the law have been implemented for the 2017-18 school year.  This includes students in K-3 who have "reading deficiencies" are to be placed on Individual Reading Improvemnt Plans (IRIP).  This website will serve as a source of information for parents and stakeholders for PA 306.
