Dimensions of music

Below is a description of some of the dimensions of music that your child will be learning about this year. I am looking forward to the opportunity to get to know each and every student and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns through out the school year.

Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and Second grade focuses primarily on the following basic dimensions of music: 

Dynamics:      Loud                                       Soft

Beat:               Steady Beat                             Absence of beat

Tempo:          Fast                                          Slow

Duration:        Short                                       Long

Register:          High                                        Low

Direction:       Up                                           Down

Melody:          A combination of direction and duration of notes


3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades:  Building on and extending understanding of the basic dimensions of music to include more specific aspects of music:


Intervals:         Including stepping, skipping, and repeated notes

Melody:          phrases

Duration:        Sound                                     Silence

Texture:         Thin                                        Thick

Form:              Repetition                               Contrast

Timbre:          Instrument families, and the classroom instruments

Dynamics:      crescendo                               decrescendo

Tempo:          accelerando                            ritardando

Style:               the nature of all the dimensions in a work and how they are combined

Affect:             the way the music makes the listener or performer feel
