WELCOME TO FIFTH GRADE!

August, 2018

Dear Fifth Grader,

Welcome to fifth grade! My name is Mrs. McCauley, and you and I will be exploring and learning lots of great things together this year! Your new classroom is Room 19. I can't wait to get to know you and learn all about you and your family!

This year, because of construction, we will not be hosting a World of Welcome. So unfortunately, you won’t be able to see our classroom until the first day of school. I will be working hard to set everything up as soon as they let us into the school. I am getting nervous, and I bet you are too! We will work through everything together. It may be a little disorganized in the beginning, but I know what 5th graders can do, and between all of us we will figure things out!

This year we will be using DOJO points in class. If you have been at Hampton before, you probably know about DOJO points because the Chinese teachers use them during Chinese class. I thought we would give it a try this year. I will group students into Colonies (like the 13 colonies you learned about in fourth grade). Each colony will have a leader and your colony will be able to earn DOJO points for being safe, respectable and responsible. I will tell you more once we get back to school.

I also want to let you know about the Flexible Seating we have in class. You will see different types of chairs and tables when you walk into class. You will sign a contract that shows that you agree to use the flexible seats in a safe and respectable way. Below are some of the types of seats you will see:

• A low-top table with pillows for kneeling

• Traditional desks and chairs

• Lap desks to use while sitting in beach chairs

• Yoga Balls to sit on

• Stools

• “Cooper Chairs.“ Cooper chairs are really wobbly stools that a lot of students like to sit on so they can wiggle around. They are called Cooper Chairs because one of my students last year, Cooper, loved these stools and he always chose them to sit on.

• Yoga mats and rugs for floor work

• High-Top tables with stools and chairs

* Pillows to use on the window sill

You will have the opportunity to try each seating option during the first week of school. After you have tried each option, every week you will choose a seat that matches your learning needs best. I can’t wait to see what types of choices you make!

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4th, 2018. This will be a half day of school. The first bell rings at 8:10 and dismissal will be at 11:25.

Please find the Suggested Supply List on this website. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me! I am looking forward to the start of a new year! See you Tuesday!

Sincerely, Mrs. McCauley
